Architecture of Solitude

A visual exploration of abandoned industrial spaces across the American Midwest

There's a particular kind of beauty in decay. These structures once hummed with activity—thousands of workers, the clatter of machinery, the rhythm of production. Now they stand silent, monuments to an industrial era that shaped America and then moved on.

I spent three months documenting these spaces, often alone, sometimes with security escorts arranged through property owners. What struck me wasn't the destruction—it was the persistence. Nature reclaiming. Light finding new paths. A strange peace settling over places built for noise.

The Packard Automotive Plant

The Packard Plant closed in 1958. For sixty-seven years, it has stood—not quite dying, not quite surviving. At 3.5 million square feet, it's the world's largest abandoned industrial site. Walking through it takes hours. Photographing it took days.

Fisher Body Plant 21

Designed by Albert Kahn, this building was once a showcase of industrial architecture. The reinforced concrete frame, the expansive windows—revolutionary in 1919. Now those same windows frame a different kind of beauty.

These places ask something of us. To remember. To witness. To consider what we build and what we leave behind. They're not just ruins—they're archives of labor, ambition, and change.
