The quote we lost on purpose

A project we wanted, priced honestly, and watched go somewhere cheaper. What we would still not change, and the one line we would.

This installs the block to components/beste/block/hero172.tsx, the badge6 component used for the eyebrow and the button1 seal button that opens the issue.

Quick start

The installed file exports hero172Demo alongside the block: the exact props behind the preview above. Spread it to get a working cover hero in one line.

tsx
import { Hero172, hero172Demo } from "@/components/beste/block/hero172";

export default function HomePage() {
  return <Hero172 {...hero172Demo} />;
}

Then replace the demo with your own props. Written out, a trimmed setup looks like this:

tsx
import { Hero172 } from "@/components/beste/block/hero172";

export default function HomePage() {
  return (
    <Hero172
      eyebrow="Out this morning"
      issueMeta="Issue 042 · 18 March 2026 · 9 minutes"
      title="The quote we lost on purpose"
      summary="A project we wanted, priced honestly, and watched go somewhere cheaper."
      image={{ src: "/covers/042.jpg", alt: "A printed estimate on a desk" }}
      button={{ label: "Read issue 042", href: "/letters/042" }}
      link={{ label: "Get it by email instead", href: "/subscribe" }}
      previousLabel="Before this"
      previous={[
        { title: "Two weeks of overlap", date: "11 March", href: "/letters/041" },
        { title: "The document nobody reads", date: "4 March", href: "/letters/040" },
      ]}
    />
  );
}

Behavior notes

  • The scrim is a gradient rather than a flat wash, from-foreground via-foreground/70 to-foreground/20, so the top of the photograph stays visible while the text at the bottom keeps its contrast.
  • Everything on the band is relative, which puts it above the absolutely positioned image and the gradient without needing a z-index.
  • Badge6 takes labelClassName="text-background/70" here, which is the documented way to move it onto a dark surface.
  • The band is min-h-[34rem] and md:min-h-[40rem] rather than an aspect ratio, so a long title lengthens the band instead of cropping the picture.
  • The button is Button1 in its primary tone, which is the variant meant for dark surfaces.
  • Earlier issues sit outside the band on the page background, so the band stays the only thing carrying an image.
